Notes for KATE GERTRUDE BITTING:
Excerpts from: http://www.kbr.org/history/history.html
The Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust is named for the late Kate Gertrude Bitting Reynolds. Mrs. Reynolds was born October 14, 1867 and died September 23, 1946. She was married to William Neal Reynolds, chairman of R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, and they lived on the Tanglewood estate until their deaths. Tanglewood is now operated by the Forsyth County Park Authority and is the site of the annual Vantage Golf Tournament. The Trust was created in 1947 under Mrs. Reynolds' will. She designated that one-fourth of the income from the Trust be used for the poor and needy in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County and that three-fourths of the income be used for charity patients in NC hospitals. These designations have become known as the Poor and Needy Division and the Health Care Division, respectively. The Trust celebrated its 50th anniversary during 1997 and marked the occasion with the publication of a book entitled, "A Legacy of Caring: The Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust," which was written by Jan Johnson Yopp. Below are excerpts from the book's foreword, which was written by Governor James B. Hunt, Jr. and former Governor James G. Martin.
"Each of us has been fortunate to be governor when Kate B. Reynolds initiatives made a difference for our state and its people. The Trust has focused on the elderly, particularly the frail elderly, and provided increased access to health care in the many rural regions of our state. It has done much to improve the lives of mothers and infants, working to give babies a better chance of survival and children a healthy start in life. "Long-range planning, cooperative ventures, and innovation have been hallmarks of the Trust's funding. Through its grants the Trust has sustained much-needed health care initiatives across the state. Trust funds have provided startup money to launch programs that later were adopted and continued by local and state government units. "Winston-Salem and Forsyth County have been the fortunate beneficiaries of Mrs. Reynolds' benevolence. The Trust has put money into programs that have helped infants, children, alcoholic men and women, teenagers, the disabled, people with AIDS, and the frail elderly. Money has assisted homeless individuals to become more self-reliant and self-supporting. "Those who have worked with and continue to work with the Trust . . . truly do not seek credit or the limelight for what they have achieved. Through the years their efforts have improved the lives of thousands of people in our state. These caring individuals during the last 50 years have attempted in the best way possible to carry out Mrs. Reynolds' wishes."
The single most significant event in the first 50 years of the Trust occurred in 1989 when private investors successfully executed a leveraged buyout of RJR Nabisco. Virtually all of the Trust's investments at the time were in RJR Nabisco stock, as Mrs. Reynolds had instructed in her will. When the Trust sold its RJR Nabisco holdings, the value of its assets jumped from $129 million to more than $262 million, substantially increasing grantmaking resources. As of December 31, 1997, the Trust assets were in excess of $478 million.
