Notes for C
ATHERINE HENDRICKS:COMMUNICATION FROM ELIZABETH HARRIS 5/23/1998: Catherine HENDRICKS is definitely the daughter of Daniel HENDRICKS and Mary ROLAND. That's all very clear from Daniel's estate settlement, in which Cannon Brown was an important participant. Mary was the daughter of Gaspar ROLAND; I am not yet sure what her mother's name was.
Daniel Hendricks was the son of "elder" James HENDRICKS. The Hendricks genealogy by John Scott Davenport states that James' wife was Christiane ROLAND, sister of Gaspar ROLAND. If true, then Daniel and Mary were first cousins. However, I've just been sent some additional Hendricks data from another descendant of Daniel that does not give Christiane's name, so I'm not sure on this one either.
James Hendricks was the son of "north" Henry HENDRICKS. There were two men named Henry Hendricks who came to Rowan Co. NC, both from York Co. PA. They were first cousins, and Davenport distinguishes them as "north" Henry and "south" Henry based on where they were living in York Co. He thinks that "north" Henry's wife may have been Ann LINVILLE, sister to the William Linville whose wife was Eleanor Bryan, and who was also a prominent early settler in Rowan/Davie Co.
North Henry was the son of Tobias HENDRICKS and (probably) Catherine BOYER, and Tobias was the son of the immigrant Albertus HENDRICKS or HENDRICKSON, who apparently came from the Netherlands to Delaware in the 1660s as an indentured servant.

Notes for HINTON ROWAN HELPER:
Hinton Rowan Helper was the author of the "Impending Crisis of the South: How to Meet It" which was published in 1857. This book, denouncing slavery, was welcomed by abolitionists in the North but made its author one of the most hated men in the South.
Death by suicide: He gassed himself and was discovered by his maid with a towel around his neck. SOURCE: Personal communication from Stewart Page Jones.
"Impending Crisis" aroused a firestorm, forcing Helper to leave the South; he moved to New York. Impending Crisis was widely used by Republicans in the election of 1860. In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln sent Helper to Buenos Aires, Argentina, as United States consul. Helper returned to the US in 1866 to write more books. He wrote "Nojoque" (1867) and "Negroes in Negroland" (1868).
Helper remained committed to strong friendly relations between the US and South America and spent the later years of his life promoting a railway between Hudson Bay and the Strait of Magellan. He wrote "The Three Americas Railway" (1881) in support of the project. Discouraged by its failure and his impoverishment, Helper committed suicide on March 8, 1909 in Washington, DC.

He was also the author of "The Land of Gold" and "Oddmerits of Andean Diplomacy".

OBITUARY:
Winston, Forsyth Co. NC, March 17, 1899
Winston has lost another valuable citizen in the person of Dr. W.L. Brown. The end came at 6:10 last evening at his home on Spruce street, surrounded by his wife and other loved ones. His death was not unexpected, as he had been in declining health for several years. He sustained a stroke of paralysis about three years ago. He was sent to the Hot Springs and then to Johns Hopkins hospital, but secured very little relief. He had another attack last Saturday and after that time never regained consciousness. The deceased was 68 years old. He was born on January 29th, 1831, near Mocksville, Davie County [NC]. His father, Thomas Brown, was a successful farmer and an honored Elder in the Presbyterian church. Dr. Brown and his only brother, Mr. R.D. Brown, who died in Winston a few years ago, were engaged in the manufacture of tobacco in Mocksville before coming to Winston in 1877. By their energy and fine business qualifications the firm of Brown Brothers built large factories and established a large and prosperous tobacco manufacturing plant in this city. After the death of Mr. R.D. Brown, the firm was dissolved and Dr. Brown and his son, W.T. Brown, who was a member of the old firm for ten years, organized the Brown Bros. Tobacco Company. Dr. Brown was chosen President of the new organization. Associated with him were his son and sons-in-law, W.B. Pollard and W.J. Wolff. The son withdrew about two years ago. The business will be continued by the surviving members of the Company. Dr. Brown married Miss Mary Eliza Chinn, of Farmington, Davie county. While a young man he studied medicine and after graduating was surgeon on one of the steamships and took a trip to one of the foreign countries. After returning, he practised his profession for a few years in Davie county. He leaves a wife and ten children, eight daughters and two sons, besides a large circle of friends and relatives to mourn his death. The funeral services will be conducted from the First Presbyterian church, of which the deceased was an honored member, at 11 o'clock tomorrow. He will be buried in the Salem cemetery.

5 BROWN, b. c. 187013; m. MINNIE WILLIAMSON.Notes for GEORGE T. BROWN:
The Birth of Brown & Williamson
- In 1883, George Brown was eager to invest $10,000 given to him by his father, Rufus D. Brown, a well-known and respected tobacco merchant. Before moving to Winston, North Carolina, in 1876, Rufus and his brother William Brown operated a tobacco factory in nearby Mocksville.By 1878, Brown Brothers Tobacco Manufacturing Co. had become the city's largest tobacco manufacturer, employing 200. Young George's brother-in-law, 32-year-old Robert Williamson, had also grown up in the industry. His father, T. F. Williamson, had owned factories in Caswell County, North Carolina, and in Winston. Robert had worked first in the family business and then as superintendent of the T. L. Vaughn plant in Winston. He had resigned that position, hoping to put his manufacturing expertise to work in his own firm. Those hopes turned to reality when George Brown, a close friend as well as family, approached him with the opportunity to join in a business venture. A drop in the U.S. Treasury's gold reserve had just triggered a nationwide financial panic. But despite weaknesses in the overall economy, George Brown and Robert Williamson were undoubtedly encouraged in their enterprise by strong industry dynamics and a promising outlook. In the fall of 1893, George Brown and Robert Williamson formally established their partnership. In its initial months, the new partnership took over Robert's father's business. The company then leased a small facility, hired 30 employees and began manufacturing on February 1, 1894. In 1904, Brown & Williamson broadened its product line and market presence by acquiring several smaller companies. In 1906, the company incorporated under North Carolina state law as Brown & Williamson Tobacco Co., with George T. Brown as president and Robert L. Williamson as vice president. The following year it entered the snuff market with brands developed through the company's own research. Over the next two decades, Brown & Williamson would achieve steady growth with its quality brands.
Then in the mid-1920s, the company made two major acquisitions that would have a far-reaching impact on its future. The first was the purchase in 1925 of the J.G. Flynt Tobacco Co. and its trademarks, including a very popular smoking tobacco brand. The next year, Brown & Williamson bought R.P. Richardson Company, which had just started to market manufactured cigarettes. By 1927, cigarettes accounted for approximately 30 percent of the total tobacco consumed in the U.S., and the market was dominated by a few leading brands. To compete, Brown & Williamson needed to expand its scope of distribution, then concentrated primarily in the Southeast. It also had to increase production capacity and leaf stocks. To accomplish these goals, a significant infusion of capital was required. At the same time, with the principals of the company nearing retirement, a restructuring was imminent. In October 1926, Brown & Williamson executives met in Greensboro, North Carolina, with Sir Hugo
Cunliffe-Owen, chairman of the board of British American Tobacco Co. They had learned that London-based B.A.T. wished to purchase a tobacco manufacturing company in the growing U.S. market. The ensuing negotiations were a success. Announced in Winston-Salem on March 24, 1927, the company was acquired by B.A.T. and reorganized as the Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation.SOURCE: Excerpt from Brown and Williamson Website - "Our Company: The Historical Perspective; Heritage of Tobacco"
