Some Descendants of Willie/Wiley Jones

Some internet sources are confusing our Willie/Wiley Jones with a Wiley Jones who was the son of Thomas Jones and Margaret Stegall of Virginia.  This is not correct.

Our Willie/Wiley Jones was born Mecklenburg Co., Virginia in 1798 and died 7/10/1861 (per his tombstone).  He married Mariah Magdalene (Polly) Hauser in 1826 and I have a copy of his original marriage bond.  His tombstone (which can be viewed on my Gravestone Photos page) is in Concord Methodist Church cemetery clearly shows his date of birth and death.   Our Willie/Wiley Jones' father's and mother's names have never been documented -- only our family records state his father's name was "Alexander", which name was passed down through our family in later generations.  Family records also state Alexander moved from Mecklenburg County, Virginia to Rowan County, NC in 1804.  There are two known siblings of our Wiley, namely Martha "Patsy" Jones (who married Edward Lee in Rowan County, NC on 03/29/1823) and William Jones, who died young.

Samuel Smith Jones was a county commissioner and magistrate in Davidson County before the Clemmonsville Township became part of Forsyth County in 1889. His name appears many times in both Davidson and Forsyth real estate indices as grantor and grantee of various properties. He also served as administrator of various estates. He was described as a "self-made man, jovial in disposition, and a Christian in faith and practice."

When William Asbury JONES married Mary Magdalena A. GRIFFITH, her father, William R. GRIFFITH, gave him forty acres of land from his plantation so that his daughter could remain close to home. The house which William Asbury JONES built on Concord Church Road between Lewisville and Clemmons, NC still stands. He served in the Confederate Army, fought in the Battle of Second Manassas and per a grandson's application for life insurance in 1904, his death was due to injuries suffered in the War for Southern Independence (Civil War).

In July, 1862, Emory Winburn JONES enlisted in Company G, 7th Regiment Confederate Cavalry. After the War, he farmed in present-day Forsyth County. His efforts were probably less than successful as he left no estate for probate at his death. Also, from various deed recordings, it appears that he had disposed of most of his land holdings by the time of his death.

Henry Clay JONES was a devout Christian gentleman who lived by his faith 7 days a week. He had a perfect attendance record in Sunday School for 40 years. He was superintendent of Green Street Methodist's Sunday School from 1908-1930. He joined Concord Methodist Church in Forsyth County when he was 14 years old. He was also a member of the Sharon Methodist Church prior to moving to Winston-Salem as a young man. In the later years of his life, he was a member of the Centenary Methodist Church.
