Notes for WILHELM ADAM WOLFF:

Moved to Wachovia Settlement, NC August, 1769 from Frederick Co., MD

Wilhelm Adam Wolff came from Germany to Pennsylvania on the Edinburgh in 1751 with his wife Maria Elisabetha (1725-1803), whose maiden name is unknown, and their infant son. They settled initially in York Co. PA but by 1759 they were living in Monocacy, Maryland, and in 1769 they moved to North Carolina, settling near Bethania. Wilhelm died in 1773. Friedrich Lorenz Wolff remained in Maryland after his parents and younger siblings moved to NC, but joined them in 1777.

August 27, 1769 - A German, Wilhelm Adam Wolff, and his family arrived today. Some years ago they joined the little congregation at Manakosy, Maryland. They are very poor but pleasant, friendly people. The parents have brought six children with them. The eldest son is at work in Manakosy but will follow them. September 2nd they moved to a couple of hundred acres of land between the Leinbach farm and Bethania. -- SOURCE: Records of the Moravians in North Carolina, Volume I, p. 392

Salem Board Minutes, Vol. 6, p. 2548

July 3, 1798 - (Auf. Col.) [Aufseher Collegium] Mr. Wolff has

offered to do the carpenter work on our new church. He seems the

best fitted for it, and we will find out how high his demands are.

Work on the galleries, the steeple, the door and window frames, can

be done without him.

1802 Salem Board Minutes - Vol. 6, p. 2709

July 13, 1802 - The Brethren were in favor of covering the church

with joint shingles, which should be of yellow poplar. Perhaps a

contract can be made with a reliable carpenter. Major Adam Wolff,

who put up the roof timbers, was suggested.

Records of the Moravians, Vol 6

March 28, 1795 - A wagon was sent for me so that at the request of

Johann Adam Wolf I could hold the funeral for his only child, a boy

of 14 years who was buried in the neighborhood. (note: index

Served in the Revolutionary War as a private and fifer for his first tour of duty in Capt. Henry Smith's Company. In the spring of 1776 they were sent to fight the Scotch Tories in the lower counties of North Carolina. He was marched to Fayetteville and then back to the Moravian settlements in Surry County. He again volunteered in the autumn of 1776 and served as a private and Fifer with Capt. Smith's Company. This time he was sent on an expedition against the Cherokee Nation and was marched to Mulberry Fields in Wilkes County and then back to Surry County to join the Virginia Troops. At this point he left to go home to help nurse a sick family and his brother Daniel substituted for him and served out the remainder of his term. Major Henry Smith, at Lewis's request came forth and gave a deposition of Johann's service to Charles Banner, a Justice of the Peace for Stokes County, on 12/24/1830. He was granted a pension of $32.16 per annum and Anna Maria was given a pension of $25.21 at his death.

WOLFF, Lewis (pensioner) -- Affidavit in Henry Smith pension file. Wolff served as musician fifer in Capt. Henry Smith’s company against the Scotch Tories to Fayetteville, NC, in 1776, and began expedition against Cherokee nation before hiring a substitute. Lived in Stokes Co., NC, in 1833. W4403- moved as child to part of Surry that became Stokes. White, p. 3922.

Affidavit of Lewis Wolff - 29 Aug. 1840 - Stokes Co., NC - Wolff served a three-month tour of duty as a musician fifer in the same militia company under Capt. Henry Smith with John Martin (who married Nancy Shipp). Col. Joseph Williams and Major Joseph Winston from Surry County met at Dobsons crossroads in Surry (now Stokes) County and there rendezvoused and recruited some time and made necessary preparations. In February or March 1776 they took up the line of march and went to Fayetteville against the Scotch rebels or Tories. When we landed there, we got information, and "glad we were," that the Rebels had just been defeated on Little River by another Whig army. Our troops after a few weeks spent in plundering the Tory dens or shops returned home.

feeble health at the time.  The following are the circumstances attending the unfortunate affair: On Wednesday after dinner, Mr. Wolff asked for a

slate, and left the house with it, going in the direction of the store of his son-in-law, but changed his course, taking a roundabout way towards

the creek, where a high embankment screened him from observations at the house. A few hours after he left, his dead body was found on

the bank of the creek, with his head and face in the water. The slate was also found written full, but with so tremulous a palsied hand that nothing could

be read. It is believed by some that he committed suicide, and others think he was again attacked with paralysis and then fell into the water and

drowned.  Mr. Wolff leaves a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn his melancholy end.

LETTERS FROM WILLIAM JACOB WOLFF TO MABEL ADAMS BROWN

Houston, Texas

April 26, 1890

My darling girl --

It is unnecessary to tell you that your letter was appreciated, for you know already that my greatest pleasure is hearing from you. Well, Miss Mabel, as we doubtless would not know each other better by longer delaying, what I for some time have been so anxious to ask you, I will plainly and in a blunt way give myself over to your disposal. No doubt you will think this is uncalled for, yet I trust you will consider it a still greater evidence of my love for you which you have been told of so often before. To love and think of you is associated with every real pleasure and to think that I could have a companion through life so dear to me as you, one whom I could look to as a pure, sweet and noble girl, would be a treasure that would command my every effort to please and make happy.

May I now ask if you can find love enough in your heart as to give me that sweet privilege and consent of calling you my own? Please give me your plain and decisive answer. I would not make one single proposition of this nature that it would not make me happy to fulfill. I would not ask the love of one whom I could not love in return. I would not have you judge my people by me for of all that would cause me shame to relate - is that I reflect least credit to the name.

I do not consider myself so "very fortunate" when I fail to hear from you in a week. So I shall with much impatience look forward to the time I will stop in Vicksburg, Miss., c/o Pacific House, when I trust your answer will be formed.

With all my love, I am ever your devoted

Will J. Wolff

(On a scrap of paper found with this marriage proposal is written in William Jacob Wolff's distinctive handwriting):

April 26th - P (proposed)

May 10th - nothing definite

May 14th - accepted.

May 18th - took measure of finger.

My dear Mabel -

To treat you as you deserve to be treated, I would not write you a line, neither would I object in the least to the absence that must follow. Have I been else but patient, kind and devoted? If so, I know not when. I am unwilling to lay aside the confidence I have in you and while I feel that you have been very unkind to me in not writing still I cannot doubt but that you have had some reason for so doing which I trust you will explain. Yesterday, I was very suddenly informed that it was necessary for some one to go South on special business and as Mr. _____ (Lewis?) does not care to go out again this season, I am to double up and make his trip as well as my own which will keep me out for almost six weeks or two months. The only regret that I have to express is that I will not see you unless I can get through in time to reach Winston this AM, and if I find a letter from you I'll come to Piedmont Springs regardless of what time I start South. If I understood your uncalled for neglect I would not go to Winston until Monday, as it is if I do not see you

again I leave my love and my heart with you and if you are true to me all will come right. While I am the one that is made to suffer, yet I will do anything for your sake and if you can say that you have complied with your feelings in showing me indifference then I can only say that I have never before so keenly felt any unkindness shown me. I saw Mr. Pollard in Winston Thursday, when first I met him I was with Miss Ima M_______, who with Miss Hill came by the factory to have me go with them over to the club rooms. I saw him afterwards and sent you a message which I hope has been delivered. Please write me the day

you receive this c/o C. Wellborn c/o Charleston, S.C. as I leave Monday morning unless I find a letter at Winston.

Hastily, your devoted

Will

Nashville, Tenn

July 8, 1891

My darling girl -

Your letter of 5th inst. rec'd this morning and let me assure you I do not think I ever appreciated a letter more. I will leave for Birmingham tomorrow night will no doubt reach Columbus, Ga. by Sunday - so you will please write me then, c/o Rankin House. You know when I left you said if I would stay over Thursday night you did not care if I stayed a day or two longer, so I will try and fix it so I will not have to go out again so very soon but it seems to me that this has been already one of the longest trips I ever made but I suppose it is from the fact that I want to see my sweetheart so bad. After next Monday, please write me to Macon, Ga. c/o Brown House as I will be there until last of next week work through (illegible). Don't I wish the time was here. Sweetheart, why is it that you will not answer any of my questions. Never mind, I will pay you back for it sometime. Well, I must quit, with all my love, I am

Always your devoted

Will

August 15, 1891

My precious Mabel -

Yours of 13th just rec'd and had it not been for your letter I would have left without the bible as the clerk had not put it in my box. "What" is it you want me to get for you sweetheart? Don't you know I would with pleasure get you anything I possibly could? So write me not later than Tuesday c/o Kimball House, Atlanta, Ga. what it is and I will get it and send to you or bring it, just as you prefer. Sweetheart, I had an awful dream about you last night and as many of my dreams, (indecipherable) me, I cannot for a moment think such a cruel fate as this will befall me. I am sorry that you have been feeling so bad, please do not forget your promise and send for Dr. Gray if you feel so very stupid and anything like a dizzy feeling in your head. I am coming home to you just as soon as I can and am sorry that I must be kept away in this way -- but what "can't be cured must be endured," so they say and it is no use to continually remind ourselves of all the unpleasantness that we have to bear. Tomorrow Sunday - a long letter then from Columbus, c/o Kimball, Atlanta after Tuesday. With all my love and kisses

Your devoted

Will

The above August 15th letter was written 8 months after their marriage in December, 1890, and William is obviously concerned that Mabel is not feeling well -- she is carrying their first child, William Lafayette Wolff, born September 22, 1891.

Newspaper clipping in family file (unknown newspaper and not dated)

"Charleston, S.C. (AP)

The funeral will be held this afternoon at the Rosemont Baptist Church for Mrs. Mabel Brown Wolff, 41, who died yesterday of burns suffered in a fire that destroyed the Wolff home in Rosemont, two miles north of here, Friday. She was the mother of two children who were fatally burned, one died in the fire and the other in a hospital afterward. Mrs. Wolff was a native of Wilmington, N.C., and a daughter of Mrs. George Meshaw of Atkinson, N.C."

NOTE:

It is believed that Mabel Wolff's name was incorrectly inserted into this notice as "Mabel Brown Wolff", since that was her husband's mother's name.

NOTE: There is a 58 year old George Meshaw listed in the 1930 U.S. Federal Census for New Hanover (Wilmington) N.C. having in his household the following:

Household 763/843

George Meshaw age 58 head

Martha age 59 wife

Rex age 23 son

Mabel Thompson age 29 daughter

Dorothy Thompson age 10 granddaughter

Margaretha Thompson age 8 granddaughter

Lewis J. Thompson age 2-10/12 grandson

Mabel L. Thompson age 2-10/12 granddaughter (obviously twins)

Assuming that Mabel Wolff's mother married George Meshaw as stated in the clipping, then Mabel's mother's name may have been Martha and Mabel may have been married to an unknown Thompson before marrying William Lafayette Wolff, Sr. Census lists Mabel Thompson's "age at first marriage" as 18, however there is no husband listed and she is living with family in 1930. If this is the same person, she would have been born about 1901.
